13 March 2010...An Evening with Sita, Surpanakha and Sandra - @ Tata Theatre at 7 pm
Retellings and Avoid The Void The evening comprises of two short plays - "Retellings" and "Avoid the Void" offering a serio-comic look at feminism, love and relationships through the ages. "Retellings" seeks to re-tell the story of one of the world's greatest epics, and presents the Ramayana from Sita and Surpanakha's points of view, imagining them not as adversaries, but as sisters - questioning some of Ram's choices in the Ramayana. "Retellings" is an adaptation of the short stories "Mother Clan", "Asoka" and "Body Clay" by Sarah Joseph, translated from the Malayalam by Vasanthi Sankaranarayan, adapted for the stage by Shivani Tibrewala. "Avoid the Void" is an original comic monologue written by Shivani Tibrewala depicting a modern urban woman's visit to her doctor, as she laments her broken relationship, questioning what it really means to be a woman - and a beautiful one at that. Both pieces coupled together serve as a comment on patriarchy through the ages, showing how nothing much has changed since the time of the Ramayana.
